Snow day!
Howdy, y'all! Yes, a bit late this morning. I'm home with E. We're having a snow day. Actually, it's a combination. E is sick and the weather's supposed to turn very ugly so I decided not to take the chance to go into work.
So, yes, E is still sick. Cold and bad cough, especially when lying down. Which leads me to wonder what to do. I'm doing the usual...plenty of fluids, vapourizer with medicated ointment, etc. But the cough is keeping her (and us) up at night. Last night I took her out of her crib for a half hour, and that was after a half hour of her coughing...a full hour at night she/we are missing out on rest. So, I was considering looking into getting her some cough medicine. She's 4 months shy of 2 years old. However, I did some research online and I haven't seen anything positive about cough medicine. Apparently, there were several deaths reported from using c.m. on kids under 2. Then another article said c.m. was no more beneficial than using sugar water. So, what should I do?? Anyone have any success with it? And if not, any other suggestions?
When she does wake at night, I try giving her water. She doesn't want it, but I leave it in the crib anyway. I know milk isn't a good idea as it creates more mucus. So I avoid it during those wake ups but still give it an hour before bed. I have been giving her infant Tylenol but think I'll stop as she doesn't have a fever. I just wish there was some "pill" to help it go away. I suppose every mother wants that but unfortunately the only "cure" I've heard of is time. Well, I can't stay on too long. It's snack time (for both of us) and E is having a great deal of fun destroying Nana's computer area. Hope you're all having a great day. Stay safe!!!!!! And drive carefully!!!!

Wish I was home too though I'm sorry to hear E's sick. As for cough medicine...never had too much luck with it. I only give it to Cole when he's really bad - B can't have it anyway cause of her asthma. I find it helps very little. I guess it makes em drowsy and helps enough for em to get to sleep a bit but it doesn't last...I'm not much help I'm afraid. You might ask a pharmacist, they know everything ;) oh, they say to go by weight on the labels not age nec. So, if she's in the proper weight range for 2 yr olds by their standards she's fine to take it.
I am not sure what kind of vaporizer you are using but a Cool Mist Humidifier, jsut the typical one to add moisture to the air is highly recommended.
2. Also, your right CM is dangerous for under
3. No milk b/c of mucus, so good on you there.
4. One tip to sooth the throat: a spoonful of corn syrup, it might coat the throat enough to stop the tickle.
5. Maybe she needs a puffer, Brady has had it twice now, it helps break up the mucus that they don't know to cough up.
Yeah, hope you don't think I was suggesting u give it to E...just that if you go by them, they'd say she's fine to have it if she's over the weight. We did give it to our kids b4 2, just b4, but again, it's a last resort for us.
I've never used CM for any of the kids, so I really don't have much to say on that .. but you know me - if I can do without the drugs - I will.
Could it be dry air?? My house gets soooo dry in winter. Even a bowl of water in the room helps a lot, I find.
Poor litte duck - hope you are enjoying your time at home anyway :)
Yeah, it's not a dry cough, so a suppressant wouldn't be a good idea. I'm not going to bother. Just keep the vaporizer going (not cool mist). And keep up the fluids. I may try the corn syrup though. I just want her/us to get through one night without having to get up with her.

Conincidence or what...there was an article in yesterday's paper all about this subject...CM under 2 is bad which we all knew. I guess I'm a bad mom for having given it to my kids just before they did turn two. I do have to say, it was at a doctor's suggestion...might wanna check out the article.
